What does it take to be an owner of a Habitat home?

Habitat for Humanity - South Collin County (HfH-SCC) is accepting applications for people who would like to purchase a Habitat for Humanity home in the South Collin County area. Each house costs approximately $65,000, not including the land.

HfH-SCC already has several lots in the Douglass community ready for development. The purchasing process is similar to buying a house on the standard real estate market.

Family Information Meetings

Attendance at a Family Information meeting is mandatory for applying to become a prospective homeowner. You can fill out our online Home Interest Form and we will mail you a notice of our next Family Information Meeting.

Qualifications for Prospective Homeowners

There are three basic requirements for qualifying a prospective homeowner:
  1. Family size—1 to 8 family members in need of adequate, affordable housing (approximately 1,100 square feet).
  2. Ability to pay— Ability to pay a 0% interest mortgage payment.
  3. Willingness to participate in the Habitat for Humanity - South Collin County program including living in a neighborhood in which HfH-SCC is constructing homes.

Other Requirements

  • Attendance at a Family Information Meeting.
  • Completion and submission of Application within 30 days of meeting application was distributed.
  • Must not have owned a home in the past three years.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
  • Two years of steady income history.
  • Two years of good rental history.
  • Good income to debt ratio.
  • Ability to pay a mortgage of approximately $400 to $425 a month.
  • Ability to work 400 “sweat equity” hours helping build Habitat houses and working on other Habitat projects.
  • Preference will be given to qualified candidates who live and/or work in our service area (South Collin County, Texas)

Once a family is selected, they and their family and/or friends must work 400 "sweat equity hours" by helping to build their house and/or by working on other HfH-SCC projects. The first 100 hours must be completed within three months of the family’s conditional approval and prior to the start of construction. Families also make a $1,000 payment toward the first year's homeowner’s insurance and 2-3 months escrow on their home. The 20-25 year mortgage is interest free.
